About Channel

Channel 4 is a publicly-owned, commercially-funded public service broadcaster. We do not receive any public funding and have a remit to be innovative, experimental and distinctive. Channel 4 works across television, film and digital media to deliver our public service remit, as outlined in the 2003 Communications Act and most recently the 2010 Digital Economy Act.

Channel 4 was launched on 2nd November 1982 with a unique business model, under the Broadcasting Act 1981. We are funded predominantly by advertising and sponsorship, but unlike other broadcasters such as ITV, Channel 4 is not shareholder owned. Channel 4 is a statutory corporation, independent of Government, and governed by a unitary board made up of executive and non-executive directors, who are responsible for ensuring that Channel 4 fulfils its remit and delivers its financial responsibilities. Non-executive directors are appointed by OFCOM in agreement with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. This system ensures our not-for-profit status; that we are held accountable and that all profit generated by our commercial activity is directly reinvested back into the delivery of our public service remit.

In addition to the main channel, our portfolio includes E4, More4, Film4, 4seven and 4Music, as well as our digital and video-on-demand platform, All 4. Through its film arm Film4, Channel 4 is also a key supporter of British film making talent.

As a publisher-broadcaster, Channel 4 is required to commission UK content from the independent production sector. We are a major investor in the UK's creative economy, working with around 300 creative companies from across the UK every year and investing significantly in training and talent development throughout the industry.

Programme Interests

The Factual Entertainment team are responsible for commissioning reality and pop doc series for 20:00, 21:00 and 22:00.

Looking For

New programmes pitched must feel contemporary, entertaining and purposeful. These will often be 9pm reality series such as The Undateables, Undercover Boss, Child Genius, and Hoarder Next Door, or pop doc series such as Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, 16 Kids and Counting, What Happens in Kavos, and Secrets of the Shoplifters. Access to either individuals or public institutions is important especially when matched with a brilliant idea, way in, or C4 twist. We focus on broad issues that are contemporary, popular, carry public service values and are also mischievous and counterintuitive in approach. Lifestyle subject areas with a narrative work well at 9pm. Our programmes tend to appeal to a young audience. In 2013, eleven of the top fifty rating programmes for 16-34s across all British channels were Channel 4 Factual Entertainment titles.

A big priority for us are big reality events such as The Jump and insightful social experiments like The Island with Bear Grylls.

We also commission entertaining and contemporary pop docs including Don't Look Down, My Phone Sex Secrets and 40 Year Old Virgins.

And we are also looking for male skewing factual formats for 20:00. Recent commissions include Kevin McCloud's Man Made Home and Gadget Man.

We have a world class roster of on-screen talent including Heston Blumenthal, Richard Ayoade, Gordon Ramsay, Kevin McCloud, Mary Portas, and Jamie Oliver. Recent talent led Factual Entertainment titles include Gordon Behind Bars, Heston's Great British Food, and Jamie & Jimmy's Friday Night Feast. Ramsay's Costa Del Nightmares will transmit later in 2014. We are always looking for new brands for existing C4 talent eg. Dr Christian in Undercover Doctor: Cure Me I'm Gay. A big priority for us in 2014 is to discover new on-screen talent. Troy had a very strong launch on E4.

What other areas could we be looking at to find new faces for Channel 4?
