About Channel

Television New Zealand, Limited more commonly referred to as TVNZ, is a government-owned national broadcaster broadcasting in New Zealand and parts of the Pacific region. Although the network identifies as a national, part-public broadcaster, it is essentially fully commercially funded, and was competition free until November 1989 when private channel TV3 was launched. This finally began the battle for ratings with the only real rival MediaWorks New Zealand, which currently operates channels TV3, Four, and C4

About

Andrew Shaw has had a 40 year career in television - both in front of and behind the camera.  He started out in the mid 70s as a children's television host on the fledgling second channel (TV2) in New Zealand.  He then moved into producing and directing and is now General Manager of Commissioning, Production and Acquisitions at Television New Zealand (TVNZ).

At 18, an successful screen test resulted in Andrew making his network debut on TV2.  He then found himself working six days a week, hosting TV2’s afternoon programming under the title Hey Hey Its Andy.

Aware that presenting shows for a young audience came with a potential expiry date, Andrew negotiated to continue to present certain shows in exchange for training to become a multi-camera director.

Andrew began working his way up the ladder to become a director and producer of entertainment programming.  In 1996 he became Programmer of TV2.  In the following year he was promoted to Head of Programming for both channels.  Two years later he became Head of Content for TVNZ, acquiring local and foreign programming for all channels.

In 2001 Andrew left TVNZ to become Chief Operating Officer at drama production company South Pacific Pictures, producers of Shortland Street.  Keen to broaden SPP's range of programming, he inked a deal with multi-national FremantleMedia, enabling SPP to produce a local version of the hit show American Idol.

Three years later Andrew then went on to work as Head of Programming and Commissioning at Prime Television, in the process making changes to the channel's schedule and upping the percentage of local content.

Andrew returned to TVNZ in 2006 as General Manager, Commissioning, Production & Acquisitions.  Andrew oversees a team of commissioners creating a range of local content, as well as an acquisition team responsible for sourcing world class international material for New Zealand audiences across all TVNZ channels and platforms.
